  • Calculate the distance of a thunderstorm. Sound and light travel at different speeds - which is convenient in measuring roughly how far away a thunderstorm is. A lightning flash may be seen at almost the moment it occurs since it's light travels at approximately 186,000 miles (300,000 km) per second.

Sound travels much more slowly, at about 760 mph (1,223 kmph), so that by timing the difference between seeing the flash and hearing the thunder, one can estimate how far away the storm is. A one second difference is about a fifth of a mile or 340 meters away.
